EXHIBITION TALK

Ausstellungsansicht „Nationalgalerie. Eine Sammlung für das 21. Jahrhundert“, Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart, 2023

Putting art to music
Exhibition: > Nationalgalerie: A Collection for the 21st Century

When we encounter art, we are often at a loss for words. What we perceive and experience is difficult to convey through language. We try to use sounds, noises and tones to find a way of expressing what the works of art trigger in us. The joint contemplation of the works is translated using musical instruments or our own bodies. This results in idiosyncratic compositions and dramaturgies as an extended form of expression.

Spoiled for choice, material!
Exhibition: > Nationalgalerie: A Collection for the 21st Century

What an abundance of materials here in the museum: artist John Knight lets weeds grow, Selma Selman builds catalytic converters from car wrecks to extract precious metals and Anselm Kiefer uses sand, old clothes and zinc sheets from Cologne Cathedral. How do artists come up with these unusual materials? What the mind doesn't always understand straight away, the senses often grasp immediately. The pupils see, hear and feel different materials and consider what this tells them about the works of art.

Ecology and sustainability
Exhibition: > Joseph Beuys. Works from the Nationalgalerie Collection

Ecology, environmental protection and sustainability played a central role in Joseph Beuys' creative and political work. For Beuys, art was a central place and driving force for designing, discussing and ultimately implementing alternatives. What examples of contemporary art can be found at the Hamburger Bahnhof? An exhibition discussion based on the work of the artist Josef Beuys in the current collection presentation of his works for high school students.

Felt and sound
Exhibition: > Naama Tsabar. Estuaries

The works of artist Naama Tsabar will be shown in a hall of the Hamburger Bahnhof alongside works by Josef Beuys. The young artist refers to works by Joseph Beuys with her use of felt and sound. While the artist's works can only be viewed from a distance, the artist invites the audience to activate her works as instruments through sound. The pupils make them sound and consider what connections and contrasts they see between the work of the two artists.
